Urbanization and Population Changes
As a result of industrialism many immigrants flooded into major cities throughout the United States during this era as well as people from rural areas for jobs in the city. Soon the cities began to overcrowd, so they made tenements to house the new inhabitants. These tenements were small and unsanitary and often lacked windows, fire escapes, and had very poor ventilation. Therefore diseases like tuberculosis spread rather quickly. These houses were poorly made and were often made of flammable material with no building codes, sprinklers and inexperienced firefighters. There was nothing to stop the fires so the buildings just burnt down.
