6.2.3 Domestic Impact of World War 1.
For this section, we had to complete a "backwards word sort." We had to analyze information and fill in blanks. This activity documented what we have learned about what America was doing at home while our men were fighting overseas.
The Home Front
Growth of Government
Cause:
- To mobilize the economy to fight a war .
- War Revenue Act (1917).
- Liberty bonds: A form of loan to the government to pay for the war.
- War Industries Board: Had the authority to regulate all materials needed in the war effort.
Effect: To mobilize the economy to fight a war, War Revenue Acct, Liberty bonds, and War Industries Board strengthened the ability to fight the war.
Restrictions on Civil Liberties
Cause:
- Large sacrifices needed to support the war effort.
- National War Industries Board.
- 18th Amendment (1919) = No alcohol allowed!
- Lever Food and Fuel Control Act -“meatless Mondays”, “wheatless Wednesdays”, “gasless Sundays”, “heatless Mondays” (aka rationing).
- Committee on Public Information.
- Propaganda: Information designed to influence public opinions.
- Espionage Act (1917): Punished people for aiding the enemy or refusing military duty.
- Sedition Act: Illegal for Americans to criticize the government the flag or the military in anyway.
- Schenck vs. the United States: Explained the limits of the First Amendment.

- National War Labor Board.
- Union membership increased 60 percent.
- Businesses must recognize unions.
- Eight hour work days.
Effect: Improved the working conditions.
Women’s Movement

- Someone needed to continue industry while the men were at war.
- Equal pay for equal Work (women).
- One million women go to work.
- 19th Amendment (1919): Gave women the right to vote.
Effect: Women made social and monetary gains because of WW1.
